California Lighthouse in Aruba
California Lighthouse is found on the north side of the island of Aruba in the Caribbean. There are heaps of things to do should you take a day trip to the lighthouse, unfortunately the interior of the structure is closed so a tour is not among the activities. Tourists flock to California Lighthouse to be swept away by the stunning views available from the hill. Dune surfing is available on nearby sand dunes for the adventurous, provided you take appropriate clothing such as jeans or long pants. Divers frequent the wreck site off the shore.
Giant boulders and scrubby vegetation surround the lighthouse, offering a different topography than what you’ve seen around your hotel and provides you with a great place to watch the Caribbean sunset.
History
California Lighthouse, otherwise known as “Hudishibana, was built in 1914, as a warning system to ships nearing the island of Aruba. It was named after an American steamship by the name of the Californian, which wrecked off the shore in the late 1800’s. The lighthouse is still in operation today.
Food & Drinks
Adjacent to the lighthouse, you’ll find La Trattoria El Faro Blanco. Once I heard they had an outdoor bar and a happy hour, I was sold on this location. Serving up fine Italian cuisine, La Trattoria is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. However, if you arrive between 3:00 and 6:00 the only thing on the menu is pizza.
Getting There
The lighthouse is easily accessible. Numerous tours offer packages including California Lighthouse as a stop. If you’re more of an independent traveler, you’ll find it is easy to reach the lighthouse by bus.
