Best Beaches in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has been a popular tourist destination for decades. Whether you are heading to San Juan for its history and culture or to the beach to surf or work on your tan, Puerto Rico has it all. Boasting 272 miles of coastline and many beaches, Puerto Rico offers beaches suitable for swimming, practicing water sports, for families, for singles and, of course, for lovers.
Rincon area – best for windsurfing
Puerto Rico offers some of the best windsurfing beaches in the entire Caribbean. The entire Rincon area offers numerous beaches ideal for windsurfing between November and April. One of them is Playa Higüero, which attracts surfers from all over the world.
Mona Island for diving & Culebra for snorkeling
There are plenty of incredible places to dive and snorkel in Puerto Rico. You’ll find them off the East, South and West coasts as well as close to the remote islets of Culebra and Vieques. Off the south-east coast you will find Humaco where big creatures of the sea return annually (with some luck you can spot whales!).
If you are staying around San Juan, then make sure to get to Mona Island (about 3 hours distance). There are incredible coral reefs to see in the clear water and you can dive at depth of 80 feet.
If snorkeling is on your mind, then the islet of Culebra is a very good choice. Not only you can find ideal conditions for snorkeling but you will also escape the hordes of tourists.

Playa de Ponce – great for swimming
If you are looking for a place to swim year round then Playa de Ponce (just outside Ponce, the second largest city on the island) is your best choice. It’s not overly crowded, it’s cleaner and the waters are calm.
Ocean Park Beach – great for meeting other singles
Along San Juan’s shoreline, right between Condado and Isla Verde Beaches, you will find Ocean Park Beach, ideal if you arrived here single and plan to find someone to enjoy the hot days (and nights). Don’t worry about perfectly sculpted bodies because you won’t see them here. Instead, you will find adults looking for nice swimming and some love.
Tamarindo Beach – best to spend some time alone
With such a long coast line, Puerto Rico doesn’t lack places to hide away from the world either. If you are looking for a beach to just be with your significant other, then head to the southern part of Puerto Rico and then start searching all the way to Ponce. One such beach is Tamarindo Beach, where (luckily) you will be alone. By the way: snorkeling is also great here!

Luquillo Beach – nice option for families
Located at 30 miles / 48 km from San Juan and offering clear water, Luquillo Beach is one of the best places to spend your family vacation. The beach is popular both among local families and tourists. The coral reefs protect the beach from the Atlantic water and offer a great place for the kids to swim and play in the water. And by the way: you can camp here!
Hyatt Beaches at Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort & Country Club – ideal for families with teens
Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort & Country Club is very popular among families with children of all ages mainly because of the activities offered. There are lovely places to swim, you can burn off some calories on the jogging trails, tennis courts, fitness room or trying the water sports.
